The best degrees for jobs are not simply the majors tied to the fastest-growing occupations.

A useful job-focused degree needs several things to line up:

  • employers actually hire people with the credential
  • there are enough openings to matter
  • the path from school into work is understandable
  • pay is reasonable
  • the degree does not require an uncomfortable amount of debt
  • the skills remain useful if your first job changes

The strongest fields in the current data are the ones that look solid on both education outcomes and labor-market context, not only one forecast.

Job growth and job openings are not the same thing

An occupation can grow very quickly in percentage terms and still produce relatively few openings if it starts from a small base.
