But “computer science pays well” is not the same as “any computer science degree is worth any price.” Program outcomes vary by college, the coursework is demanding, and the technology job market can move quickly. The better question is whether the specific CS programs you can attend offer a sensible relationship between cost, debt, completion and graduate earnings.
The earnings case for computer science is real
Computer science has an advantage many majors do not: there is a fairly obvious connection between the skills taught in the degree and a large set of well-paid technical occupations.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a $135,980 median annual wage for software developers in May 2025. It also projected employment for software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, faster than the 3% average BLS uses for all occupations over that projection period.
Those numbers are encouraging, but they need a warning label.
A software developer wage is not the same thing as the earnings of every computer science graduate. Some CS graduates become developers. Others work in data, cybersecurity, product, consulting, finance, research, government, education or occupations that do not fit a neat “computer science” label. Some do not work in tech at all.

The price of the degree can change a very good major into an ordinary investment
CS has enough earnings power that students can be tempted to wave away price.
Don't.
If one program costs you $25,000 a year after aid and another costs $65,000, the expensive school needs to create a very large benefit to make the financial gap disappear.

Students interested in technology often have more than one plausible major.

Computer engineering sits closer to hardware and the boundary between electrical engineering and computing.
Data science can be more directly focused on statistics, machine learning, data pipelines and applied analytics, though curricula vary widely by college.
Information technology often leans more toward deploying, administering and supporting systems.
Cybersecurity focuses more directly on protecting systems, networks, software and data.

The job market can be strong and still feel volatile

A period of rapid hiring can be followed by layoffs. Entry-level recruiting can tighten even while long-term demand remains healthy. New tools can change which skills employers value.
The current BLS outlook is supportive for software development, but a four-year college decision should not be based on one hiring cycle.
A more durable reason to study CS is that the degree teaches a set of transferable technical skills: breaking problems down, writing and understanding code, working with data structures, thinking algorithmically, testing systems and learning new technical tools.

When computer science looks like a particularly good financial choice
The numbers are strongest when several things line up at once.
You can attend a solid program without excessive debt
A lower-cost public university with good completion and strong CS outcomes can be a very compelling combination.
You actually like technical problem solving
You do not need to have been coding since age 10. But you should be willing to spend a lot of time debugging, working through abstract problems and learning systems that do not behave the way you expected.
The curriculum is rigorous rather than trendy
Look for fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, systems, databases, software engineering, math and opportunities to build real projects. Specializations can sit on top of that base.
You will use internships and projects
The degree label helps. Evidence that you can build and work with real systems helps too.
When I would think twice
Computer science may be a poor fit if you are choosing it only because someone told you it is “the safe major.”
It also deserves more scrutiny if:
- you would need very heavy borrowing for the program;
- the college has weak completion or weak program-level outcomes relative to similarly priced alternatives;
- you strongly dislike programming and technical problem solving;
- the curriculum is thin or outdated;
- you are assuming a six-figure job immediately after graduation because you saw an occupation-wide median salary online.
